Bird Story - April 2008

Smokey again…

April 28th 2008 03:14
Smokey is one of the most curious, amusing, determined, affectionate pigeons that I have ever known! I have mentioned him in many previous postings, but would like to talk about him a little more. I mean, take a good look at the dude, is he not simply adorable?

I am not sure why he suffers from bloodshot eyes, but he always has - & I swear I keep my wine well out of his reach!!!! Of course, for the past few months he has taken up his desires and followed Spotty to her residence to live at nighttime, but he always seems to be hanging round our place in the day. Sometimes, he brings his wife with him, but Spotty only comes once a week or so. Awwwww, bird love!!

When I come home from the stores, sometimes Smokey is waiting to get inside… Now, why would I be leaving my keys in the drain, Smokey? Or maybe he was turning his back on me for not having the door open for him quicker!

He is a bright bird - I think he has figured out that I spent all day on my computer on a Friday, as he does not seem to visit then!

From the Pigeon Parlor

April 22nd 2008 01:26
Regular readers will realize that some of the first shots taken on my new camera were bound to be of the pigeons! Yes, I am guilty! The first shot is of Speckley eating a leftover pizza slice.

The second shot is of Baby1 & Bebe2 ambling across the mid-lawns for dessert after seed-feed.

Thirdly, here are Dusty & Speckles, also greedily parading about the mid-lawns after dinner.

Finally - for today - here is BabyNob, perched upon our door top.

Beautiful big brown eyes, sigh…

Heron Happenings

April 18th 2008 19:23
Last week, I tested out my x12 regular digital zoom combo on a white-faced heron that landed in my back yard and proceeded to munch bugs for lunch from the vegetable patch café.

You will have to excuse the geranium and rose bush getting in the way - I am still learning the features and focus on my new 'toy'…

I did take 2 shots of a younger heron yesterday, when it flew onto the washing hoist and then into bug-land territory - ho hum, unmown grass - but have not got the latest pics onto the computer yet, so will probably post those in the future. Here is the last of my first heron shots on the new camera though.

Pelicans Plus

I took the train down south to Kiama last weekend, in the company of my new digital camera. I am happy to report that I finally have some decent photographs to share once more!

BALDNESS

April 11th 2008 21:19
Bald-bonse got named because when we first met our friendly magpie he had a balding patch on his skull. We spent 3 years being his chief cheese-provider! His featherless space came and went, seasonally I assume. We still sometimes meet him at the park across the street or on the road to the local shops.

More recently, I have noticed another balding bird. A baby myna bird seems to have a very yellow face with few feathers. I have learned from this that myna birds have yellow skin all over, underneath their feathers, and not just their eye-leg areas. If the feathers are not there, their face remains bald and yellow. I can always tell our tamest baby myna from the others, as it has an empty yellow face

INSIDE

April 9th 2008 01:52
Although we don't own or house them, and did not purchase them, our friendly 'tame-wild' show pigeons are quite fun as unofficial pets! We feed and love them, and that seems to be enough for them to love us back.

If I just open the back door a fraction when Smokey is nearby, he will dart onto the door top and parade upon it claimfully. He knows I would not shut the door if he perches on top of it. He KNOWS I have to check to make sure he is OK

Our roof

April 4th 2008 04:45
The pigeons land upon our roof as if hand gliders landing on their chosen
X-marked spot. Sailing down, preparing, and then hitting target. Usually…
(One might catch the edge and foot-stumble from time to time though
