Bird Story - August 2008

Gobble my food up!

August 29th 2008 15:32
Here are three shots I took of the home-pair munching old cooking. Whether it was lychee and sultana pie crust or lotus and chicken pizza base, I am unsure... It may even have been the herb bread that I baked.

I have been saving a piece for the birds when I bake anything as it has been so cold lately. I felt they might like something more than just seeds... also, pizza gets kinda boring when the toppings are all gone and you have an entire pizza base to yourself - I would be so greedy not to share it with the birds, wouldn't I?

Romance in the pigeon world

August 26th 2008 15:12
Recently, I have been spending a lot of time either in bed or in the study. (It has been cold, but I have been busy.) I have poked my head - and camera - out of the window a little, though. Whilst cooking dinner last week, I caught Bebe2 with his new girlfriend!
kitchen window

This would explain why he is not always around for breakfast! I had begun to wonder... Several times last week he missed the meal. Now, I know that it was not the storm we had last week, but love keeping him away from home!

Baby1 seems quite lonely when he is the only pigeon in the yard. Without his brother to squabble with, and with me so busy/cold, once the city flock disappear for the evening, he is sometimes alone! Bebe2 did spend two of the last 6 nights here though - I know because I heard the two brothers chase each other over my roof, whilst trying to study!

Friday fears

August 23rd 2008 02:57
We had terrible gales last night, but I did not realize how dramatic they were til getting up this morning. There was luckily no major damage - but a giant chunk of carport roof had rolled across the yard towards my vegetable patch - and one of the 2 pigeons that live on our roof did not show up for breakfast.

I was rather unsettled til dinnertime, worrying in case the pigeon was injured. Luckily they BOTH came down to dinner-seeds twenty minutes ago though - along with a starving Smokey and Spotty.

I think the other city pigeons are somewhat reluctant to venture out, even if the winds are calmer now. there are still rolling dark gray clouds up there...

There were only our two, Smokey and Spotty, and Black Scruff for dinner tonight - we usually have 1-2 dozen rather than five. I hope to be spending time in the yard tomorrow - so hopefully the winds will be gone, those ominous blackish clouds won't pour, and the pigeons will all be back!

The New Pigeon

August 19th 2008 17:06
Last Monday morning, I peeped out of the window and spotted a new pigeon pecking about at the left-over barley seed, post breakfast munch. Baby1 and Bebe2 only having had a few guests for breakfast, the less popular barley seeds had been left to last. Dusty, Speckley and Scruff had bought a new friend with them though.

I am not sure whether to call it whitecap, blackback, or whitehead. I shall wait to see if it comes to visit more often before deciding, perhaps! It may be like the black and white pigeon that visited us last week - only coming once. I do not know, but assume it to be male - seeing as neither of the two young men were chasing it to stake a claim

The dunny roof

August 15th 2008 16:04
Sometimes, up top the dunny the pigeons are at peace - for example, Bebe2 sunbaked and dozed away one afternoon...
sunny dunny

At other times it can be chaos up there. One day last week for example, I heard an almighty noise...crash, bash, smash

Garden update

August 12th 2008 16:36
We have had some interesting occurrences in the back yard recently. Firstly, it is no secret that silver gulls gets somewhat pissed off with kookaburras. If they spot one calmly resting upon a TV aerial, they will swoop and squawk at it, annoying the poor thing. Our local mob of gulls are an adventurous lot - last week I spotted them trying to attack a cat! I heard their familiar screeching attack on something, and went to see if I could throw a scrap lout for a kookaburra. I did not find a kookaburra however, but the cat from two doors along, cowering under attack, scrunched as low to the garden path as possible, with a bunch of screaming gulls swooping overhead.

Secondly, Smokey and Spotty have been to visit - primarily at dinnertime - a few times last week. Spotty is almost fearless in her pursuit of seed now, amongst a large crowd of at least 2 dozen city pigeons it would be a case of 'only crumbs left' if she was not. The weather has been somewhat cold recently, Sydney actually having snow in the city according to my son's report of a weather report from either TV or the WWW. I know that down south in the Illawarra I have been wearing a winter coat, hat and gloves for my early-morning typing sessions. I have also swollen out into chilblains on two fingers - ouchies

Lost pigeons and hungry ravens

August 7th 2008 17:39
Anyone in the Illawarra region of NSW, Australia who happens to spot this smart looking pigeon with a banded leg - and possibly also a small appliance attached - please check to see if it could be the listed missing pigeon at http://www.redroomcompany.org/ If you spot this bird, please contact pigeons@redroomcompany.org or call 1300 887 606
lost bird

It has been exceedingly cold recently, and the birds have been coming for food that have not come for some time. I mentioned before that we had magpies again - now, our tame raven is back. It was scrapping with the two magpies over a few pieces of cheese three days ago. Yesterday it stared up at me with such hopeful eyes - it had to be fed! I could not resist those silvery beams

Tax time

August 5th 2008 16:47
I was preparing to do my tax return last week - a rather boring yet necessary obligation that becomes a difficulty due to the fact that I had overseas income, ran a sole trader business that made a minor loss, and got a govt. payment - as well as having a son that stopped schooling and became a non-dependent a few months ago.
tax time

I had not long started, when I noticed a few feathered friends investigating the entryway. Ribster had gone to investigate behind the door and Bebe2 wanted to sit on my gum boot and watch me stress over the tax forms. Baby1 was more interested in the muck and crumbs in the dustpan

The Red-browed Finch

August 1st 2008 18:05
I have discovered the identity of the mystery bird that I spotted on my walk to Corrimal a few weeks ago. It was a red-browed finch. The official name for this bird is Neochmia temporalis and it is from the Passeridae family.

They are a fairly small bird, averaging 11g and 11cm. They are apparently easy to recognize, due to their red eye-stripe and red under-rump marking. This species munches on both seeds and insects
