Romancing Dreamy

September 30th 2008 04:06
Now that I have introduced you to Dreamy in my last few posts, I have a photo-update for you. Dreamy recently received romantic attention from our very own Baby1.
multiracial flirting

Firstly, he paraded about nearby, the way pigeons do, dancing his talents in the corner of the possible mate's eye. This hopeful flirting got no response, other than from my camera! Dreamy just - um - dreamed!

Baby1 was not going to give up that easily, though. He courted so close, Dreamy had to notice.
courting pigeons

well yes, she turned her head to see what the great big white feathered thing was doing dancing beside her. But Dreamy did not seem to wish to either participate or run away. Dreamy just - um - daydreamed.

Baby1 really did put on his very best display... but Dreamy simply stood there, daydreaming.
making a pass

Finally, Dreamy walked very slowly, just a few steps forwards and away, leaving poor Baby1 bewildered - Usually birds either permit or rebel, not just stand around ignoring such advances...

If anyone in the ILLAWARRA region of NSW, AUSTRALIA is missing a pretty all-white show-pigeon with a pinky-red band on its right ankle - please email me at madeliaette@gmail.com as we may have become the new home of your missing pigeon.

Arriving around Wednesday 24th September - possibly Tuesday 23rd - a beautiful, pure-white show pigeon joined our twice-daily pigeon feeding session.

At first, I assumed it was a released 'unwanted-stock' specimen from a nearby breeder, as we often find 1-3 show-pigeons visiting with us for a few days, until mingling with the local city pigeon flock and leaving with them. However, I noticed a pinkish-red tag on this pigeon's ankle, and therefore assume it still belongs to someone - possibly a concerned or distressed local owner.

If you have recently lost a banded pure-white show-pigeon in the Illawarra region, please get in touch with me in order to discuss whether or not this pigeon, who appears to have found a new home on our roof, might be yours.

I already care for two show-pigeons that live on our roof, so your bird will be provided with fresh water for drinking/bathing, & also 2 meals a day of mixed wild bird/parrot seeds, along with the occasional offering of home-baked wholemeal bread guaranteed to contain NO artificial ingredients for as long as it chooses to stay with us. However, if you would like to collect your bird before it mixes/leaves with the city flock who visit us daily, before it gets attached to either of my pet-pigeons, or before it looses its fine looks due to living on a roof instead of a professional pigeon-house, please contact me ASAP at the above listed email. (We do not connect our telephone, however I check this email 4 times a week.)

In the meantime, I will attempt to locate websites where local missing pigeons may be reported, and see if I can find the owner before they find me. If anybody hears of such a lost bird, please get in touch and notify me of an email I can contact the possible owner, thank you.

Dreamy

September 24th 2008 19:45
Dreamy, the recent addition to our garden flock, is a friendly little fellow. It seems to spend most of its time in our yard now. I wonder where its family and friends are - because it sees to be the only crested pigeon in our yard. That reminds me of myself - the only one of my kind in the local region, with all my friends and family abroad - unless you count my son who shuts himself in his room and prefers his TV and PC to me!

Dreamy hangs out with the turtle doves and city/show pigeons, or spends time alone. It often stands alone, as if daydreaming, just stationary, doing nothing. It is almost as if the bird meditates!

meditation

I wonder whether it is melancholic, meditating, lost, lonely, abandoned at a young age, or simply attracted to our yard.

Dealing with the rain

September 22nd 2008 14:46
It was raining - pouring in fact. I had a few moments spare and took a look outside - camera in hand. Wedged in a tree crevice was our tame crested pigeon.

We have seen a lot of this little fellow since. It has developed quite a personality since its original scurrying about introduction

White-faced heron photos

September 19th 2008 19:18
As promised in my last post, I will share my recent heron photos. He walked down the mid-yard keeping to the shorted grass, whilst foraging amongst the longer grasses - erm, and weeds.

Above, he walked by the geraniums. Below, it passed by to the next patch of 'oops-weeds with' flowers

The tail of a crested pigeon

September 18th 2008 22:08
We do not have very many crested pigeons - aka whistling doves - visit us any longer. There has been one that sometimes pops down with the city and show-pigeons recently though. I tried to take a photograph - but -...

...managed to catch only the tail! Let's face it, that could be the tail from any creature - even a kangaroo

Recent Visitors

September 15th 2008 16:17
I have had a little time spare due to re-organizing my week last week. This has enabled me to spend some time looking out the windows into the back yard. Sometimes, I have had my camera in hand, and I should have some photos to share later this week, when I take them out of the camera and put them onto the PC.

Amongst our recent guests has been the white-faced heron. He was seen casually wandering along the edge of the properly-mowed lawn, dipping his delighted beak into the long 'oops-no time-to-fix-it-yet' grass at the sides

Eggs!

September 12th 2008 15:13
Yes, my original guess must be true - Smokey and Spotty have a nest of eggs! To back up my belief, these two birds who have spent the past few weeks necking upon the windowsill when flying to visit me together, are now coming with hungry eyes, at strange hours, and separately.

I can hear the 'Seeds, seeds, oh please give me some food; I need it.' in their expectant and hopeful stare. I can see the desperation in their eye, as they fly in to land upon the roof or sill, and then look at me the moment they spot me. I only have to open the back door, and those 'PLEASE!' looks hit my heart, flooding out from my feathered friends

Pigeons and food

September 8th 2008 15:59
We have recently been visited by a new show-pigeon. I have already named it Graybie, due to it being predominantly gray and white. It isn't shy at all. It came directly down as soon as it saw the other pigeons dive towards the scattered seed.

Contentment

September 4th 2008 16:09
If you ever want to know what contentment looks like - observe pigeons! Sometimes they may squabble and dance, show off and fight, but at other times, they are so contented and peaceful.
Here are Scruff and Black Scruff, resting shortly after having taken baths in the water dish.

Magpie muncher

September 2nd 2008 15:09
One of the baby magpies from a previous year recalled we exist as a cheese donation cafe. He came to visit us a few days ago, giving me the opportunity to snap him on the camera.

So, why has he turned his back on me? Is he camera shy? NO! He has a piece of cheese situated behind him. Cheese is far more interesting than trustable old women with big grins on their face! He did almost turn towards the camera for a little while - cheese morsel safely tucked into beak
