Bird Story - January 2009

BOTANIC GARDENS 2

January 30th 2009 19:41
One of the most everyday findings at a duck pond is naturally the ducks…

Although the above actually happens to be shots of a bird also known as the Australian wood duck, it is related to the goose and can also commonly be called the Maned Goose!

Here are some more of these fellows swimming in the pond itself… and another bunch….

BOTANIC GARDENS 1

January 28th 2009 23:17
Over the Christmas - New Years break, I took my camera along to the Botanic Gardens. I managed to capture quite an assortment of snaps of the local waterfowl. Over my next few postings, I plan to take you on a virtual 'bird-orientated' tour. To start with, I encountered a purple swamp hen…

It seemed to be enjoying the grass, ignoring me, so I managed to take a couple of stills of it before moving along with little more haste than the fowl.

Next, I came across a cute little fellow at the pond. He had obviously been enjoying the water, as he was drying off on the edge of the pool - or perhaps doing an impersonation of a bat?

ON THE WALL

January 26th 2009 17:30
I sat down to hang with the pigeons at the rose garden after my coastal walk that I mentioned in former blogs. No sooner had I done so, then a pair of friends hopped up to join me!

It may have been unfamiliar territory to locate one another, my back yard basically the only place we have formerly encountered one another, but they knew their food source when it walked abroad!

Here we see Lil Miss Scruff - Bebe2's chick & Dusty.

Taking a hike…

January 21st 2009 15:03
I recently took a stroll along the coastal track and then took the road back into the city to get home. Who should I see on the street but my friendly city pigeon flock!
road pigeons

They had greedily stuck into something edible that had been left on the road - which luckily was not busy

Christmas pigeons

January 19th 2009 23:50
I may not have had any human guests to celebrate Christmas with this year, just a stay-in-his-room son, but I had company just the same as you can see….

More kookaburras!

January 16th 2009 17:31
One last picture-blog of the kookaburras! Here are a couple of shots of one who flew down and pinched some ham from the pigeons, giving them and me both a surprise.

And one last kookaburra photo before I revert to my usual pigeonalia next week, and then get onto talking about the waterfowl photos I took recently at the Botanic Gardens

Not all of nature is pleasant…

January 14th 2009 14:29
Still on the subject of kookaburras, here is a very bad shot of the baby kookaburra with a dead mouse in his beak. He flew into the yard screeching and laughing with both parents in hot pursuit and paraded all over the carport roof with it before flying off. I never knew if he dropped it next door or actually figured out how to consume it… as he was screeching on next door's balcony for a short while afterward...

Kookaburratide

January 12th 2009 17:24
Well, most of my three week writing break was spent hanging out the bedroom/back yard, or working on my next novel. One of the major pieces of news is that we have new babies in the yard - there are a baby kookaburra and a baby cuckoo-shrike hanging out.

I will therefore start off with a few shots of the parent kookaburra who came down to pinch some of the ham rind I chopped and scattered for my pigeons
