Bird Story - February 2009

UNSURE…

February 27th 2009 16:55
I am not quite sure about this little fellow. When I first spotted it up in the privet tree, I assumed it was a parrot, but was uncertain as to the variety.

Then, I was wondering - perhaps it was a baby rainbow lorikeet? But they generally have blue heads, not red - so it must have been a parrot of some sort.

Whatever it was, it soon flew to the Hills Hoist, ignored the seeds I threw down - which were hastily devoured by a few of our pigeon flock who had been hanging about the yard, and flew off after staying for a further five minutes on the washing hoist!

Pigeonalia 1

February 25th 2009 17:26
We have had a new pigeon visit a few times recently, although I have not seen it for over a week. However, whilst it was a regular, I managed to grab a couple of photos.

I have called this one Angel, as it was forever sticking its wings out and resembling one!

It had a curious stripe on its face, otherwise resembled a german owl-winged cross. Another newbie on the scene is white-spot, who basically has a few white patches on his head and body… but I have yet to have my camera handy at the right time!

Fairy Wrens

February 18th 2009 17:30
Among the birds I spotted on a recent walk to Puckey's Estate were a family of fairy wrens. I have yet to get a perfect picture of this species, but I will keep trying…

The main problem being that they are not as tame as our pigeons, greedy as seagulls or magpies, or used to slow walkers with cameras as much as fast cycles, dog walkers, and joggers

The magpies visit

February 17th 2009 00:51
We have not seen so much of the magpies lately, but I took these two shots a couple of weeks ago and have only just taken them off the camera.

I have not forgotten!

February 13th 2009 20:12
Although my last few posts have concentrated on an excursion and photographs, I have not forgotten to keep track of the home-flock of pigeons and there follows an update or two…

In major league news, my pair of twins have partnered up - or it seemed that they had

BOTANIC GARDENS 7

February 11th 2009 16:49
I watched to see what would happen next - interested in the variation of species that were present, and the theory that geese looked like ducks and ducks like geese on so many occasions…

BOTANIC GARDENS 6

February 10th 2009 03:02
Shortly after the procedure described in my last post, the 'raped' goose showed that it was quite unharmed - and did not seem to mind if the whole world had been watching - including this human with a silver box attached to its eye…
nothing

The family were soon all chattering away together quite happily - I figured the movie had finished and the cast were enjoying their socializing

BOTANIC GARDENS 5

February 6th 2009 21:26
My trip continued to offer much entertainment associated with birds and sex. I shortly afterwards passed a grouping of geese that resembled a scene from an x-rated movie, were birds to be rated so…
geese sex pose

With two 'romancers' offering the action, two 'onlookers' not minding their own business, and a pair of 'we are not looking at this…' geese, it was quite comical to imagine their actual thoughts, as well as those possible

BOTANIC GARDENS 4

February 3rd 2009 16:14
I was lucky enough to encounter some live action nest building whilst still in the pond district of the Botanic Gardens. I was taking shots of the waterfowl at random, when I noticed that one fellow had a leaf in his mouth and was swimming along in a direct line…

Following his adventure, I soon spotted that he was taking his treasure to a companion that was serenely and queenly seated upon a half built nest
