Some of my friends live in our yard, others visit it, still others live elsewhere and I visit them. Come and read about all my feathered friends...

Bird Story - April 2009

The pelicans

April 29th 2009 17:01
I had some time free, for once, on the weekend - so took a stroll down to the harbor. After spending a little while seated in contemplation, observing my fellow species rushing past in bouncing jogs or hurrying by in rapid walks, I wondered if anybody else was out just for fun, with no set path or destination. Everyone seemed to be hurrying to some place, or out for the purpose of 'keeping fit'. Nobody else seemed to simply be wandering at leisure and enjoying it.

Shortly after recommencing my promenade, I spotted a pair of pelicans, that likewise were seated in contemplation. It seems I have more in common with my feathered friends than my own species, sometimes!

They observed me and I observed them… and just like with the pigeons on my windowsill, we seemed to be relating on the level of wondering WTF the 'other species' was exactly…

This week

April 27th 2009 17:25
Nearly every week either the season, weather, or wind has changed, bringing different conditions - and birds - into our yard. This past week, we have seen the white-faced heron visit on multiple occasions. The rainy days brought the doves to shelter on the poinsettia tree, where they have a favored branch to perch upon. For some reason, they like to line up 3-4 in a row on the dead branch. Therefore, when pruning it last year, I left the dead branch in situ - instead of removing it.

Ravens have been cawing about a lot lately, also. Although I have not seen any in the hard this week, I have seen them fly over several times and have not spent a single day without hearing them numerous times in the park across the street. I was walking home from an appointment in the city yesterday, and spotted a brave magpie grumpily swooping down at a pair of ravens that dared enter its territory. I know that magpies do not get along too well with ravens though, as our original family of pies moved 2 blocks away when the ravens first moved into the park across the street.

Pigeonalia 7

April 24th 2009 20:49
Baby has spent most nights on the windowsill above my son's bedroom lately, though he did condescend to spend the night on the alcove above mine once last week. I am not sure if it is the neighbor rattling her empty tubs to dislodge the birds from her own windowsills and roof, or if there is a change in the underground water course that is responsible for the change of bedding.

We have our regular mob come to feed, but since my neighbor has started being noisy and disrupting them - and me - they do not stay in the yard very long, unless she is out. It is a shame, as there used to be always the coo-wooing of doves and pigeons chattering about outside in the background, and now, I go outside to silence.

Baby1 came home very late 2 nights ago - I had gone to bed and almost dozed off when I hear him clump onto the windowsill and peep inside - as if to beg for food. He had missed dinner!

Recently…

April 20th 2009 15:59
I heard a flapping, as I was reading my book. Looking up, I saw a great big winged creature pass overhead, aimed at my next door neighbor's roof. Wondering if I should run for the camera, if it might be a pelican, heron, or ibis, I peeped out. It was just our friendly white-faced heron.

It stood on the roof for a minute or two, before flying over our own and then disappearing further inland. It seems to be quite a common sight, these days. I have spotted it foraging among the grasses of our yard three or four times in the past couple of weeks. And this heron does not scamper away at the sight of me

Gosh - galahs galore!

April 17th 2009 23:20
I was having an everyday weekend day, doing a spot of meditation and burning some incense, when I became aware of a squawking. I took it to be myna birds or starlings, or some such noisy feathered friends - until I got up to grab a glass of water.

Passing the kitchen window, I discovered a flock of around 2 dozen galahs right outside the kitchen window tucking into my newly mowed lawn's grass seed supply

Rain, rain, rain, sigh…

April 15th 2009 18:02
Along with a hectic workweek and personal disruptions, the weather has severely limited my time available to hang out with the birds in my yard. However, they do not seem to have visited as much lately, either. Whilst we still have the doves, starlings, mynas, and pigeons, most of the other birds have vanished or just flown overhead. Even the pigeons have stayed absent since my next door neighbor started banging a juice container on her wall to stop them settling on her windowsills.

The incessant rain, clouds, rain of the past few days has lessened the bird population of our home, just as I have completed my workweek a little in advance and am free to hang out for an hour or two

Baby Pie

April 8th 2009 18:59
I could not resist grabbing a few more shots of the baby magpie - it sounds so cute as it squeaks in a begging tone for cheese on sighting me. It also squeaks to call for me if it does not spot me, and only gives up if its parents call it away or it finds some tasty morsel already awaiting it on the lawn!!!

Sometimes, it spots me and charges up to the doorstep an hops up for its cheese - too fast for the camera

Myna bird munchies

April 6th 2009 17:37
Still with the starling and myna bird shots, I took one more of the duo before proceeding into some photos of the myna munching away without the starlings.

Yesterday, I spotted pigeons, doves, myna birds AND starlings, all eating together on our lawn… what a sight! It is amusing to watch them and see who the bullies are in each species and if they only pick on heir own type or all other birds, etc

Starlings feast time

April 3rd 2009 20:12

Recently we have had a lot of starlings in the back yard. I managed to catch several shots as they munched away at some of my unwanted cooking. Suddenly, a myna bird wandered into camera shot…

Feeding Around The Yard

April 1st 2009 16:26
A big raven was down munching at some left over home made bread I had tossed out onto the lawn - when a wagtail came along and started pestering it. Whilst it was somewhat amusing to see this tiny flittery bird try to annoy this giant, sleek, slow one, it made the raven fly off with the lump of bread instead of staying long enough for photographs!

Doves eat nasturtium petals? I had no idea that doves would eat flower petals. I knew they sometimes munched the nasturtium seeds, but the petals? I saw one doing this though, so they must
