Bird Story - August 2009

Pigeonalia 21

August 31st 2009 15:34
Black Scruff and Speckley shared the bath tub! That was so cute. Normally, if one pigeon is standing or sitting in the water tub, they will peck any bird that comes near them, even a partner bird. But this time, when Black Scruff bathed, he let Speckley climb in beside him!

On another occasion, Speckley was first to fly down for the feed. He had one foot stood upon the seed tray, which was balanced over a lump on the doorstep. Each time he bent down to pick up a seed, the tray rattled and scared him. It was somewhat comical at first, he rushed to eat a few seeds - then stood back confused and alarmed - then hungrily rushed to eat, etc…

I have not seen Bebe, Baby, Smokey, Spotty, or even Dusty in weeks. I am hoping that they have found a closer-to-home place with seed supply. The rubbish wild pigeons eat is disgusting - sliced white bread, meat scraps, processed junk foods - anything that they can find. I feel sad that humans discard such rubbish without care, or even purposefully feed it to birds, not realizing the birds need a healthy diet as much as we do.

MISSING PIGEONS - lost and found

August 28th 2009 15:48
I often find a stray pigeon amongst our flock at the seed tray, and I am sure I am not alone. In order to help worried owners relocate lost friends, I have made this post. If anyone ever finds a stray pigeon with a tag, simply record as much detail as you can and I will post it up on this missing pigeons entry. Also, if any pigeon owners have lost a beloved bird, they can let me know the details and I will post it up also. In this way, hopefully some pigeons will find their way home.

FOUND PIGEONS
AUSTRALIA:
(These birds know where to hang out to obtain fresh water for drinking/bathing and daily seed)

* 'PRP 14' - bright green tag on right foot (also has dull green tag on left foot).
A male pigeon with speckley colored wings first seen on August 25th 2009.

UPDATE: 'green legs' seems to have moved on, possibly returning home, and is no longer taking seed and water at our back yard or mingling with the city flock.

* 'SCF 2008 09223' - white tag on right foot.
A male pigeon that is mostly pale gray with ruddy-brown markings. He has been courting with Miss Speckley of the Wollongong City pigeon flock and recently claimed her as his partner after having spent several months mixing with the Wollongong City flock.

UPDATE: '092' is currently nesting with his wife.

MAGPIE VISITING…

August 24th 2009 00:10
I recently took a few photos of a visiting Australian black-backed magpie. It flew down and scared all the pigeons away just as I tossed out their seed. Naturally, I went inside and removed a piece of cheese from the fridge for the pie…
cheese eater

The magpie stared - raced over and gobbled up the cheese morsel. It then illustrated that it would rather like me to provide it with seconds - by looking at me and then the ground where the cheese had been…
drinking pie

After looking around for any more pieces, it regarded the bird seeds rather reluctantly… and decided to take a drink instead of try to eat them - recalling that once before it had tried to eat some sunflower seeds but they were far from as tasty as the bugs they resembled.

THE DOVES

August 20th 2009 16:32
I am beginning to notice a few differences in the turtle doves. For a long time, TwoToe was the only dove I could distinguish from the rest - simply because for some reason he had lost one of his toes - and chased ALL the other doves continually.

TwoToe no longer visits our yard and is possible dead, however this years 'crop' of baby doves is beginning to pour in and three o them are separable from the rest

Back yard update 3

August 17th 2009 01:11
The doves coo-chasing about - coo-wooing upon the poinsettia limb and bouncing it about. They are so cute hopping coofully about at seed time,. Unlike the beak-in pigeons, they jump and play at the dining table.

The heron was back briefly. It stood meditating serenely on the lawn for about fifteen or twenty minutes - and then recalled itself ad began hunting for bugs in the long grass to one side. I was wondering why it was so peaceful and stationary - it usually just eats and runs - this time, it seemed to be absent minded, daydreaming, or meditative

Pigeonalia 20 - post bathing peace

August 14th 2009 14:16
Yesterday gave me another chance to hear the constant splashing of the water tub outside my bedroom. I was reading and resting whilst the pigeons were enjoying their bathing. When I looked out shortly afterward, I saw 092 and Speckley sunbathing in the warm winter afternoon sunshine on my lawn. It all looked so peaceful.

Of course, when WhiteSpot and GrayScruff appeared with a few more of the city gang, there was a little squabbling over who should sunbake in what position and I was son coming to the rescue with the evening seed meal. they seemed to be more peaceful after their bathing than the earlier feed and did not scrap so much when trying to grab best seeds

The Hills Hoist

hills hoist

One of the favored spots for perching within our back yard is our Hills Hoist. Many of the birds will rest on it, dance from rung to rung upon it, swirl about as if it were a roundabout, or stand upon it and bite the gnats that gather about the laundry
