Bird Story - September 2009

On the steps

September 28th 2009 00:32
I have a few pictures to share of - yes - it is those pigeons & doves again!
dove

They looked so cute hanging about the seed dish, that I could hardly stop myself snapping away. Of course… the results don’t all turn out so cute, especially when a pigeon twists around while I am focusing my attention on the camera options…

As a rule, the pigeons enjoy their feed time and offer me some comic or clever poses. More pigeon pics & other bird-life news coming soon!

Smokey came home!

September 25th 2009 14:14
As promised, here are some photos of Smokey - who arrived home for seeds last week, after staying away for MONTHS!

It was 7am, and I was just looking thru the curtains to see if the pigeons had arrived for brekkie seeds, as sometimes they come early and sometimes later. I saw this pretty gray face staring in at me from on the sill.

I immediately thought of 092, but it came right up to me instead of flying off the sill when I moved the curtain and was pale gray all over without marks - so I thought SMOKEY!

He recalled that if he flew to my hand, he could pinch the best seeds from the tub before they were thrown to the dish - and the city flock stared at this act in disbeleif - whether hey thought him greedy, selfish, or brave. He also flew onto the top of them open back door when he had finished stuffing - something none o the city flock did. A little later, he sat on my sill and 'beaked' my nose thru the glass. It was GREAT to see my dear friend again. That really made my day!

Baby pigeon - aw, cute!

September 21st 2009 17:27
baby pigeon 1

A lot of baby pigeons are being born, currently. One squeaks each time it gets nipped on the neck for trying to take boss-bird's favored seeds. Another hung out with me on the lawn. One of its eyes was only just opened, and its lid kept closing a bit. I managed to get a lot of photos…

It walked up and down the steps with the seed dish, fell into the water bowl when taking a drink, sat in the yard after exploring around, and walked down the driveway into the front yard for a bit of exploration.

It followed the starlings stuck its beak AT rather than AROUND seeds and crumbs as if unable to visually focus, and stared at me when I watched it and took its photo.

It must be difficult to be so small that you have not yet learned how to eat.

Back yard update 5

September 18th 2009 16:12
We had a baby pigeon in the yard recently, necessitating the use of my trusty old camera - whilst taking shots of the pigeon - that I will share with you shortly - a magpie landed and started demanding that I take HIS picture too…

I had not long gone inside, when I heard another visitor calling from the privet tree. This time, it was a black-faced cuckoo-shrike. I managed to get a couple of shots through the kitchen window - though they were not very good

Let's watch the dove

Whilst lying on the lawn taking shots of the pigeons, one young dove was brave enough to risk the 'fallen down human with silver appendage' and munch-lunch-bunch of bigger birds.

It cannot fly, it must not die…

September 9th 2009 23:30
Another youngster from the recent births or an older pigeon with a problem, I do not know - but a pigeon was acting very strangely. It ran about the lawn and did not fly back home with the other pigeons after feeding. I kept an eye on it and in the evening it still acted this way. I saw it crouch and bend a wing as if to fly upward, but then run off again, circling the lawns.

For some reason, the pigeon seemed unable to fly. Its feet were not gray ad its nose was white, so I did not think it was one of the young, but it might have been, I suppose. If not, it might have got injured by the magpie that swoops at the birds if they nibble the bread and cookie scraps when it wants them - or some other reason, but it could not fly properly

Pigeonalia 22

I was lain upon the lawn snapping shots of the pigeons at feedtime… and oh how funny they were when I checked them out!

Here we have a rather greedy, gobblesome pigeon - simply shoveling down his dinner, with an astonished friend on the side, wondering when his turn will come

Back yard update 4

September 7th 2009 16:32
The heron has been heard honking its way around the neighborhood recently. Apart from on one occasion, I have yet to see him land in our yard this month though. He almost came to visit last week - but as I was sitting on the garden bench reading a book, he decided not to leave the neighbors' rooftop and subsequently flew elsewhere - honking in disappointment.

A pair of magpies have been begging for cheese recently. Once they came down rather late - I had already gone to bed when I heard the shrill 'gimme some cheese' demands of my friend. I admit I got to bed early, but

Around the world…

September 4th 2009 13:59
Having grown up in England before migrating over to Australia more than twenty years ago, I remember many different bird species to those I currently see everyday. The possibility of another major relocation made me consider that nowhere else on this planet has the same birds as our local Illawarra region.

Yes, they have magpies in England and America - but not Australian black-backed ones. I expect that every country has its fair share of seagulls around the coast. They may have sparrows, starlings, pigeons, doves, and wagtails in most parts of the world - but I have not come across wild galahs, myna birds, cockatoos, bulbuls or rainbow lorikeets elsewhere - yet
