Some of my friends live in our yard, others visit it, still others live elsewhere and I visit them. Come and read about all my feathered friends...

Bird Story - October 2009

I have a few more pigeons on the doorstep piccies to share.
lost visitor

The first selection is of a temporary guest that almost made it to our lost & found pigeon page - but has not visited for a while, so assumedly has moved onward - and hopefully homeward.

munchies

The second collection is also of the same bird - and his fellow companions at our seed-feed dining café. And finally - a close up of one of the gang intent on observing me for a short time prior to returning his attention to the meal.

Baby doves

October 27th 2009 15:04
Recently, we have had an outbreak of baby doves. It is very interesting to me to watch their progress. They start out with soft brown feathers and gradually their spotted neckpieces appear, one or two spots at a time.

Most of them start out shyly. They first sight me and stand rock solid - fixing their eyes upon me, necks scrunched up in dread. Once they are aware that I mostly move slowly, provide seed and water, and love them, they start to be overcome by hunger and risk it to join in with those huge pigeons and their fellow doves to take part in the feasting. A few will leap away a few yards in fear or fly off to a nearby branch, but mostly they return once they see the other birds' bravery and the lack of harm in me.

Shared sadness

October 21st 2009 16:13
Recently, I have been somewhat drained and strained from the pressure of dealing with a combination of deadlines and bureaucratic imbeciles. I have had very little time to just stand at the windowsill looking out and sharing time with my feathered friends.

Some of the pigeons are more receptive of my mood than others. Smokey always knows how I am feeling. If he sees me glumly propped head in hand upon the sill trying to steal a few moments peace from a day of chaos, he will fly right up to my face to look at me in sympathy.

This is very touching and makes me wonder how much he can understand of the pains of being human. With others of my own kind also taken up in the stress and struggle of the fast-paced living I try to avoid, sometimes it is only the birds that can share a moment of release with me.

Although somewhat blurred, these two pictures show the environment of the pigeons on our lawn. Amidst a landscape of deep grass and many natural-only home-baked giant crumbs, the birds are able to wander at leisure - providing a local cat or the next door neighbor does not disturb them

Back yard update 7

October 12th 2009 14:13
Rain and stormy winds have kept me from doing much work in the yard for a while. I had begun to snip at the privet shrub - but had to stop as I was wondering about the possibility of nesting bul-buls. I had begun to edge the lawns, and completed most of the task. I had begun to weed the nasturtiums and plants along the side - but the weather then told me to stop work!

Looking at the yard, the bul-buls have been hovering about the privet rather too often for my pruning tasks' comfort. I do not think they already have a nest there - but they seem to be very interested in it - and I do not want to risk it just in case they do already have a nest

Ah, pigeon romance! Recently a few of the pigeons have been romancing away all over the yard and windowsill. I thought Smokey and Spotty looked so cute, I took a few pictures of them…

This is the pair up to some serious head preening. Followed by a couple of shots of them standing very close together

Back yard update 6

October 2nd 2009 16:13
I have noticed that the recent wild gales have made the turtle doves more adventurous. Several of them will now stare through the window at me, hopefully, until I surface with seeds for them. They are much braver when I open the door, as well - many standing on the lawn waiting, rather than flying away and then returning.

Spotty came and stood on the bedroom windowsill. Smokey must have told her to come visit me! Aw… It was lovely to see her again. Smokey and she have been regular visitors for the past 2 weeks now. They are far tamer than the bulk of the city flock, from which only Dusty was really tame. I have not seen Dusty for a long time, though. I find Spotty a pleasure when she comes close to me on the sill - as she was originally extremely shy and cautious and it is beautiful to now be trusted
