Some of my friends live in our yard, others visit it, still others live elsewhere and I visit them. Come and read about all my feathered friends...

Bird Story - November 2009

BIRDS…

November 29th 2009 14:46
In England, I recall blackbirds, thrushes, finches, wrens, - mostly dull-colored twittery birds. In Australia, we have galahs, cockatoos, magpies, lorikeets, parrots, and brightly colored birds with an array of warbles, croaks, and calls. Returning to England and it's birdlife will be akin to eating a plain slice of fruit cake after being used to chocolate sponge with cream n jelly filling and a frosted and sprinkled top!

Yet, they will still be full of feathers, tamable, want to be fed, get used to me and possibly land on my windowsill… What breeds and connections there will be will be a surprise for us all. Whatever I find, I shall endeavor to photograph - and then share here as soon as I am set up with a computer and internet access again.

Maybe I will see robins, jackdaws, chaffinches, blue-tits… I am sure there will be a few seagulls, as we will be living only one-two suburbs inland. My father did mention ONE 'big fat pigeon'…

I will miss my pigeons, almost as much as I will miss my son!

Only two week's left…

November 24th 2009 14:46
As my passport arrived a week earlier than expected, I shall shortly be heading overseas. I will mildly miss the garden, lifestyle, and freedom of running my own home - but I will heavily miss my pigeon friends!

Shredding excess photos, turning out pleasant memories, and go to this or that place for the final time offer mild pangs I can rise above and ignore - but looking into Smokey's eyes, or seeing the way Speckley, White Throat, & Spotty trust me is a heart-wrencher. They do not have many friends that provide them with fresh water, healthy seed, and love…

However, even if I stayed until they passed, new pigeons would be born and loved and lose when I moved - and I am sure there are other people somewhere that regard pigeons as intelligent and friendly rather than feather 'n' poop bundles to scare away.

A few days ago, I thought I had 4-9 weeks left here, but all of a sudden, I have just 2 - that is not so very long when most of the time is spent organizing tickets, relocating my son, packing, cleaning, organizing…

On my final day, I shall tip out the entire tub of birdseed over the lawns as a farewell gift to my friends - even if I have to depart before they all come to visit.

UPDATE: I had JUST written up this blog to post tomorrow, when our plans collapsed. My son cannot move where he had hoped to, stranding him here with a rent he cannot afford unless I am also here to help him pay - so I have to stay through until mid-January, after all!

UPDATE: But then, I come online today and find he may be eligible to move there after all... so maybe I do only have two weeks left!

Baby Lorikeets!

November 20th 2009 14:52
The squeaking noise that we have heard recently has been explained. One or more baby lorikeet is growing up in a nearby tree. Alas not in our yard, but 2 doors down.

I find it lovely to hear the chattering chittering of the lorikeets from early morning to dusk, as they eat from our privet and umbrella tree and pigeon seeds - as well as live 'two-trees down'. It is the sort of background noise I can tune in to and enjoy.

I have yet to see the baby/ies - but have heard the squeaking in conjunction with the chittering, and quietness comes without one or other - and I recall a similar squeaking when a baby lorikeet ate from our tree with its parents once before. I am looking forward to spotting the 'resident' baby/ies!

I will be keeping my camera batteries charged and ready...

This and that quickies

November 17th 2009 13:51
I have been busy turning out our home so that it will fit in our 3 suitcases - which I finally purchased on the weekend. I have therefore not got any more photo to share with you yet - though I hope to take some whenever I find the time to take a leisurely walk along the coastal track. Therefore, I just have a few snippets of yard-happenings to share today.

* There was a fluttering by my window - it turned out to be a bulbul trying to munch something stuck in a spider web on the outside

Our precious pigeons...

November 13th 2009 15:20
I am going to miss those dudes when I relocate overseas in a few week's time. I was going through my pictures, 'pruning' my stock so that my photo collection will fit on a CD to take with me, and have only just realized how many photos I have of them. I now only have a few hundred... but must have originally taken a few thousand - on pigeons alone.

Beautiful moments that stand out over the past 4 years of feeding these birds include when the first show-pigeon we met first hand-fed from me, when they built a nest on next door's roof and had their first pair of snow white twin babies, when the original pair walked right into our house without fear and tried to build a nest on top the linen closet, when one of the 4 youngsters born on next door's roof sat on my head or had a nose-2-beak thru the window when I was down n blue, and watching the youngsters marry off to city flock stock

Lentils for lunch

November 6th 2009 15:23
I learned something new earlier this week - which birds do and do not eat cooked lentils. On the same day that I mentioned in my last post, the magpies completely ignored the lentils that were left over from my lunch. However, plenty of other birds investigated them.

In the end I got to witness a beautiful sight - all because I had cooked too many lentils

A pair of pies.

November 3rd 2009 16:28
Yesterday, I was just about to lay down for a rest after feeding the pigeons my leftover lentils and their seeds, when I heard a pair of magpies descend. Unfortunately, I have recently turned vegan and no longer buy cheese…

I felt so sad that I had no treats for them, as I had not baked any bread either until later that night. They both stepped up on the doorstep and stuck their beaks inside looking - they made sure I had seen them
