Bird Story - March 2010

from chaffinches to jackdaws

March 26th 2010 10:31
We have noticed a chaffinch frequenting the yard on a few occasions, though not this week. I have not seen once since my chioldhood, though my father says he has had one in the yard on rare occasions over the past decade.

The robin came onto my windowsill recently - itsaw me nibbling something inside and assumed the outside crumbs might be worth investigating - despite it being so close to a HUMAN!

The collared doves have been getting tamer - twice one has settled on my sill to rest after munching - um, and romancing it's partner in the tree near my window. It is nice for me when the birds trust me and come close - as this is something I miss from Australia, where many of them did.

When I am out walking, shopping, etc - I often meet up with birds that I do not see at my dad's home. Once, I spotted a flock of geese flying over the golf course - and on another occasion a heron standing on a rooftop.

The recent beak-filling of an adult blackbird means nesting season is underway - and yes, the jackdaws are building one in our very own chimney. The blackbird might already have young hidden siomewhere in the area, but the jackdaws have been pairiong up in their early morning flights and picking local chimneys. We have a pair breaking off twigs from trees and building in our chuimney - so do our next door neighbor, the house over the street, and the ones along a few doors, and...

News from Sussex

March 19th 2010 09:36
I should have my own home computer again next month, and the net at home the month after - PHEW! ( I have so many photos and videos to share...) But the main news this week is one of sadness for the birds - their tree on the front vergeof our home has been chopped down, removed competlely-roots and all.

The bluetits used to climb all over the tree and nibble bugs - the jackdaws and starling used to sit on it and call out - the robin used to sit on it for a short time before flying onto the gate - sparrows, wood pigeons, blackbirds all used our tree...

I am uncertain why the council chopped it out, rather than cut it back as they did the rest of thetrees on our street - and i do not know why they churned out the roots rather than allowed a regrowth, as they did in our Aussie home when they cut down the tree out front, but it is sad...

Pheasants

March 8th 2010 10:38
I first saw a pheasant running across a field whilst out walking back from the shop. The next sighting was as I lazily looked out of the window one morning and spotted one parading about the grass verge outside! Out came the camera - but alas, he had moved on before I could arrive back to the window.

Generally, these birds live in wooded areas, inhabiting covered areas. They nest in dents in the ground, which they line with grass and leaves. The nest is usually hidden within undergrowth, under plant cover, or in a hedge. The pheasant usually lays 8-16 eggs, but this number can exceed or decrease. The eggs are pale alive in color and laid between April and June.

Pheasants eat ant eggs, bugs, berries and grains. This bird measures around 53-89 cm long. You can spot it as it has a red face, mainly chestnut plumage with black and cream bits, and a fairly long tail. The female is browner in colroing. The official name of the pheasant is phasianus colchicus.
