Bird Story - April 2010

baby birds in Britain

April 30th 2010 09:07
Firstly, I have observed a baby wood pigeon. Initially, it sat onma tree branch and stared at me. It must have come from the laurel tree behind the main tree near my window, as there are blackbirds nesting in the main tree. On adventuring out of nest, it decided to stay and watch me for several hours - in turn, I watched it!

At first, I was concerned its parents might have abandoned it or died - but after 2-3 hours a parent arrived and fed it. This bird hopped about the hedge and tree for 3-4 days before vanishing. That was not the end of baby birds though!

A day or two later, two baby blackbirds used the same branch of the tree by my window and also took notice of me and I of them. This pair are now enjoying foraging about the yard under father's supervision.

This is stil not the end of babay birds exploding out all over the garden... The jackdaws in our chimney have young, the starlings in the house roof across the back have young, and I am sure that is not all.

I finally purchased a new computer yesterday, enabling me to offload several hundred pictures ready to share when i getr online at home again - and leaving my card free for more videos and pictures.

goldfinches

April 26th 2010 08:27
I have never seen a goldfinch before this week. The past 4 days, I have seen a pair frequenting our yard however.

My father says that they used to be seen in the front of the house, but never inside the garden or around the back. Now, we have a pair nesting two trees/yards along.

I have managed to take several photos - but will have to wait to share them with you until I get the internet set up at home - which should be within the next 6 weeks.

They often pop onto the tree outside my room, drink from the water bowl in the back yard, or sit in their nesting tree. I have also seen them munch something in my flower patch and in front of the compost tub. They apparently eat both seedheads and insects, so it could have been either that attracted them.

A yard full of nests

April 16th 2010 09:07
One of the most recurring items in the yard this past week has been spotting new nests and romancers about to build. I spotted another new nest being built this very morning, while sipping my coffee...

We have a pair of jackdaws nesting in our chimney - with another pair next door that are already feeding their young. i heard some noises in our nest yesterday that might mean babies are hatching, but I am not certain yet.

In the washing post there is a robin nest being built. I saw one active little fellow whooshing about with grass and sticks and things 2-3 days ago. My father says that there used to be an old kettle stuck on the post - hidden now by the ivy - so it is probabaly being a nest yet again after many former years of service.

There is a blackbird taking foodin its mouth INTO the tree outside my bedroom window - I therefore think there may be a nest there too! Another interesting fact to note concerning blackbirds is that they eat sweet potato clippings. A few pieces dropped out of the compost tub I was emptying and shortly after I spotted a blackbird munching bits of one.

Mr & Mrs Coo shared the bird bath this morning - shortly before one or other of them took twigs into the holly tree on the opposite side of our yard to the big tree near my window. More nesting, I presume!!

I would not swear to the number of sparrow nests going on in the thick hedge between us and next door - but I should say at least 3... so it is definitely a very busy and interesting time of year.

windowsills

April 7th 2010 09:27
Since I shifted furniture about in my childhood bedroom, I have lain my bed facing the window. This means that i can be very lazy and lie on it and watch the birds...

This additionally has the benefit of my being able to slowly reach over to my bedside shelf and grab the camera if a bird comes close on the tree or lands on my windowsill

Nests and baths

April 1st 2010 08:29
A pair of starling have been taking twigs into a neighbor's roof. I assume this is nest building, as many birds are up to this activity. Jackdaws are collecting twigs by sitting on trees and grasping them in their beaks and tugging them off for example. Our chimney, next door's and 2-3 others are all occupied with a pair of jackdaws.

I cleaned out the old stone birdbath a week or so ago - but no birds seem to use it. They all bathe and drink from the newer plastic one. Father says the robin used to use the stone one once, though
