Some of my friends live in our yard, others visit it, still others live elsewhere and I visit them. Come and read about all my feathered friends...

Bird Story - May 2010

A quick mention

May 30th 2010 10:30
Before I continue to share all the photos that I have collected over the past 5 months - I would just like to offer an update of what has been going on in our yard. This very day, as I was washing up after my salad, I had the delight of spotting a great tit acting acrobat on the thorny plant in front of the kitchen window munching bugs.

After a time, I noticed a loud noise occurring, and spotted a couple of starlings in the bird bath - before the great tit had vanished, the 2 starlings had become 2 families.

Soon, as I was drying up my cutlery and then watching whilst being lazy and doing nothing, I had the delight of watching nine baby starlings and parents all enjoying the bird bath and environs. I assume some of these birds came from the hole in the neighbor's roof, but I am not sure where the other family come from - yet!

To begin with my bird photos from England, is a wood pigeon I have named WP munching tucker at my father's bird table…

I have taken a few pictures of WP sitting in the tree outside my bedroom window… here follows two of these to get you acquainted with the British Wood Pigeon.

Photos of the new environment

May 28th 2010 04:33
Finally, I am online at home - well, at my father's home… So it is time to share some of the photos that I have taken during my offline-at-home absence. What better way to begin than by sharing a couple of general pictures of the new yard…

These will show you the complete difference to my lovely 'empty' yard in Wollongong, Australia - my father's yard is FULL UP!

My old yard looked like this…

And the new backyard at my father's place looks like this from the kitchen window…

Or like this from my bedroom window…

As for the new front yard…

As you can see, there is much more in the way of tree, bush, plant, and STUFF than space - but that has not stopped me watching and getting to know the local birds.

Update on baby birds

May 21st 2010 09:10
Two baby blackbirds were tossed a worm that Pa-bird had found and bitten. One of them hopped after Pa, waiting to be fed - leaving the second youngster to stare at the worm. It pecked at it, played with it, tried to eat some of it, and eventually ate about half - I then had to leave the kitchen window so did not learn whether it ate the rest or left it.

Pa blackbird sat on my windowsill - the baby birds watched. I think they are learning that crumbs on the sill are safer than cat infested lawns! One baby amused me by sitting in the tree playing with a leaf - trying to bite it. It was as if baby birds use their 'mouths' as well as baby humans to explore their new world

All at once...

May 14th 2010 09:07
I was in the kitchen baking a fruit and nut slice and glanced out of the window - waiting while my dessert baked. I was rewarded with such an array of delights, I hardly knew where to look first...

A pair of bluetits were on the rose arch right in front of the window, playing acrobats, dangling and darting about to nibble bugs. The dove that was feeding on the seedtable was suddenly startled by a landing jackdaw who was hungry and wanting to feed her offspring

Precious moments...

May 8th 2010 09:21
A special moment from the past week...

Mr Coo nibbled seed on the lawn while WP munched seed on the bird table - Mrs Coo flew down into the yard hopefully...As WP was in her intended 'cafe', she quickly fluttered back out of the yard - looked at a tree branch and then decided to land on my sill instead
