Bird Story - June 2010

More Fieldfare pictures

fieldfare

I have 3 more pictures that I took of fieldfares back in the winter of 2009/2010 to share with you. These were taken in my father’s front yard when the snowy cold weather brought these birds into our yard to feast upon the cotoneaster berries.

As you can see, fieldfares are similar to thrushes and redwings - and once again, it takes a while to differentiate between them when you are new to all the species as I was this year. Australian birds are extremely different, and I am still getting used to the English bird species.

Yard Bird Update 3

June 26th 2010 04:52
The heat has affected many of the birds in our yard. The baby sparrows sit wobbling their tiny wings in our shady tree - blackbirds lie with wings outspread and gaping beaks ‘panting’, and starlings stand in the bird baths.

I managed to catch a quick shot of a blackbird surviving the heat in the tree outside my window. I also managed to catch a couple of pictures of a baby sparrow taking a siesta on the same tree.

Yard Bird Update 2

June 24th 2010 16:35
Well it has been a yard full of baby bird events this week. Firstly, I caught sight of a baby greenfinch sitting on our tree. The parents were nearby having a drink of water at the time. They soon rejoined their child who happily flapped its tiny wings as if to show off that it had wings. It was able to fly, but seemed to love the fact that its wings moved as it sat their flapping away.

Next, I took the laundry out to hang up on the line early yesterday morning. What should I encounter on exiting the garden door, but a baby sparrow on the path. It took a look at me, seemed a bit scared and hopped rather than flew away from ‘danger’.

I walked slowly after waiting a moment, but it simply hopped further into the side of the yard where there were plenty of shrubs to hide in. Baby sparrows are therefore not as tame as starlings in our yard - for there is a baby starling that is exceptionally tame. My father only has to put out the bird food on their table and it flies straight down, without waiting for us to go inside. It is a bit of a bully though - it chases off any other starlings from HIS table - even the adults!

Blue-tits

I am now going to share a selection of photographs I took looking out of my bedroom window into the tree one morning. A friendly little fellow stared it at me, hopped about the tree, and scraped the twigs for edible items while I held the camera and clicked away.

Three more pictures

June 19th 2010 09:09
I have a photo of the fieldfare sitting on the cotoneaster under the lounge window to start with. Once again, these photos are from the British wintertide and not recent.

I also managed to get 2 shots of a redwing - but not very good ones. However, if you have no ifea what they look like this might be enough to give a few clues - similar to both thrushes and fieldfares, the major difference is the rusty band at their wing

Blackcap photos

blackcap

As formerly promised, here are some wintertide pictures of the blackcap. It is a seasonal visitor to these parts, coming into our yard only in the coldest months of the year especially to feast on the small purple berries of the tree in the front yard that I have yet to identify.

I have finally got around to posting these photos that I promised to share almost 6 months ago. The snow has well and truly left our area now, as have these beautiful birds

Yard Bird Update 1

June 10th 2010 13:41
I saw the goldfinch again today, whilst washing up. I could have got a super photo - except I had wet gloves on and no camera handy. I did not see them for some days, so had thought they might have moved on since the babies hatched.

WP has found a mate, after spending the past 5.5 months aloof and beak in air. I spotted the newbie pigeon at the bird table with him this afternoon

smokey and friends

The second batch of photos that I took before leaving for England are of the pigeons. Firstly, we see Smokey and friends on the dunny roof. These are the key pigeons who visited most days and whom I miss more than the rest as we were closer, almost like family.

When I unloaded my almost-filled 1gb memory card onto my new computer last month, I put a few photos aside for future posts that I took shortly before leaving Australia. I would now like to share these with you.

ROBINS 1

robin

Here is a picture of one of my new friends, the local robin. He has been hopping on my windowsill on a couple of occasions, making a nest with his wife in the ivy covered washing pole, and leaps to attention when he spots my father or I digging in the yard - ready to gobble up any goodies he can find after we go inside.
