Bird Story - July 2010

Photos from Dec 09-May 10 - 8

One further photo of the adult goldfinch….

And then the promised snap of the baby goldfinch. As you can see, the head markings of the juvenile are not as vivid as that of the adult bird. The identification took me through several pages of my bird identifying guide before I checked - and discovered that yes, baby goldfinches do not have the head markings of the adult - so it was just a youngster and not a new species I had found in the yard.

Next I would like to share some pictures of the goldfinches that have nested in a tree two doors down and spent much of their time visiting our yard for food and water.

The first shows the bird itself and the second his usual watering hole being enjoyed. These birds were with us for a couple of months, before and during hatching their young. I have a photo of a baby goldfinch to share with you when I next post.

A baby blackbird is the next photo subject clear enough to share - although not entirely focused. You can see that baby blackbirds are more mottled like a thrush, but their antics ensure you do not miscalculate and misidentify.

Baby blackbirds hop about tree branches experimenting with their new jumping, hopping, leaping, flying, etc skills. They always start to call when they spot a parent bird around though, hoping to get the food sticking out their parent’s beak.

I was lucky enough to find two baby blackbirds in our tree, but not lucky enough to get a decent shot of them both in the same picture…

Wood pigeons and their young 2

July 19th 2010 17:06
Wood pigeons feast upon seeds mainly - but also consume green shoots, acorns, grain, nuts, caterpillars, slugs, berries, and, when visiting bird tables, homemade bread!

The usual habitat of this species is woodland, but it has also adapted to gardens, which they currently frequent as often as the woods. Their nests are built in trees or bushes and are made of sticks. Between April and August wood pigeons tend to lay 2 white eggs at a time. It is also possible for earlier or later broods to emerge dependant upon local circumstances

Wood pigeons and their young 1

July 15th 2010 06:59
My next selection of pictures brings us to the baby birds that have been abundant in our yards over the past 3-4 months. A beautiful wood pigeon was born in the tree outside my bedroom window and shared some precious days and times before leaving to find a new home for the future….

The wood pigeon is also known as the ring dove in England. It is a fairly large bird, of 16 inches, which equates to 41cm. Larger than the show pigeon and city pigeon, this bird is resident year round in England.

Wood pigeons can be recognized by their white neck band and small white stripe on the wing - although one of our local bunch does not have a white bar on its wing - this is how I can tell WP apart from the other wood pigeons!

Next, I would like to share with you some photos of other birds that have visited my windowsill at the same time as I had my camera handy. Firstly, WP the wood pigeon.

Usually this bird is satisfied to sit on the tree outside my window and pep in at me from there. However, on this occasion, he decided to investigate the crumbs I had put on the sill that had been attracting other birds and I managed to get a couple of photos of him staring in my bedroom at me inquisitively.

There follows a collection of pictures of a cheeky little blue-tit that came to visit my windowsill. Although he initially seemed to be flying at a bug inside the glass, he soon decided to peep inside at me, as well.

I am wondering if he thought the bug was my food rather than his and whether he thought I might be willing to share….

I now get to the photos I took when the jackdaws began nesting in our chimney. You can tell I am still a long way behind in sharing my photos, as the nest is now deserted with the baby jackdaws enjoying the chimney from time to time.

Firstly, I have a picture of a pair of turtle doves that sat in the tree outside my bedroom window. This picture stems from circa January this year.

I now have a pair of photos of starlings taking a bath to share with you. These were taken shortly after the last photo, but remain an everyday occurrence. The major difference now to then is that they now have an army of babies joining them
