Walking along the circular track, we came across some more ducks - of various types. Once again, apart from Australian waterfowl, I am definitely not an expert, so I remain unable to label each and every breed spotted. However, I hope you enjoy the photos of common breed ducks…

Back Yard Bird Update 6

I saw a bird standing on top of my father’s polytonal yesterday - one that I had not seen before. On investigation within my guide, I discovered it to be a sparrow hawk. This explains its behavior.

After standing for a minute or two, the bird suddenly shot up into the holly bush where the doves old nest was situated. Nowadays, the starlings flock on the tree before coming down in a group to munch in our yard or take a bath/drink.

The sparrow hawk shot into the tree, startling all the starlings, and flew off again. I expect it had tried to eat one but been unlucky. I recall my dad mentioning a sparrow hawk killed a dove once, but this is my own first encounter with the bird.

Continuing with the last pictures, here are a few more shots of the bird and a friend in the pond we were passing. Not being an expert with waterfowl, I am unsure if the partner is a female or youngster of the same species or simply a friend in tow of another species.

The next few photos I wish to share with you are various birds sighted on our travels around the reserve. I am inexperienced in waterfowl, rarely having sighted any English species for over 20 years - so cannot identify many of these beautiful birds.

I have managed to discover that the first is a white-faced tree duck, though, and my next shot is of a mandarin duck!

Meanwhile, I have now got the photos of the local show pigeons onto the computer to share. You can imagine my delight and warmth of heart for these beautiful birds, if you have read former posts from my old residence in Australia, where I had a flock of show pigeons call our yard their second home - then moved to England, and did not know any small creatures….

Being a pigeon lover, you can expect a few pigeon pictures to crop up wherever I go - even a wetland reserve. Here for example, is a fellow I came across and just had to snap.

Bewick’s swan & Whooper swan

Bewick’s swan is also known as Cygnus Columbianus. Along with Whooper Swan, known also as Cygnus Cygnus, these two birds are winter visitors to the British Isles. Both swans are mainly found in the North of the UK.

These swans inhabit estuaries, ocean water inlets, and lochs. The diet of both swans consists mainly of shellfish and water-growing weeds
