Bird Story - October 2010

ARUNDEL WETLANDS RESERVE 12

There were a few youngsters amongst the many waterfowl viewed on our outing. Always interesting and often entertaining, these birds were not camera shy.

Some were still under the parental eye, but wandering here and there to entertain us nevertheless.

Here we have another bunch of wildfowl wandering along the same path as us viewers. They are seemingly just as lost in conversation as the human population sharing the path.

Of course, there is always a solitary straggler, wandering along solo…

A pair will not always have their minds on the same item - food often occupies one of a duo more than another.

Yard Bird Update 8

October 22nd 2010 15:22
Well the latest news is pigeon related yet again - it doesn’t take me long to find some pigeonalia to discuss! There are now two baby pigeons living in the tree outside my bedroom window once more.

No sooner did I see the pair of doves there for 1-2 days, than the doves moved tree and the baby pigeons arrived on the scene. Parent pigeon is in attendance - but there seems to only be one parent.

I am not sure if wood pigeons are similar to show pigeons or not - but show pigeons and rock doves (city pigeons) both use both parents to raise their young. Whether something happened to the missing parent - or they take it in turns and one flies very far away - out of sight - I do not know. The pair of youngsters like to peer in at me as I lie on the bed and stare out at them…. I wonder if they will enjoy the music I play tonight?

Yard Bird Update 7

October 19th 2010 16:24
There were a very polite pair of birds sharing the stone water bath last week. I glanced up from my washing up or cooking, or whatever chore I was engrossed in, to spot a robin on one side and a blue-tit on the other. Both kept to their own side of the bath, both allowed the other to also enjoy the water, and both seemed to show respect towards the other - taking it in turns to dip to drink or shake and wash.

A couple of days ago I was also looking out of the kitchen window at Dad’s place. This time I spotted WP the wood pigeon munching seed in the bird table whilst the two bird baths were filled. The stone bird bath was covered in at least a half dozen sparrows - and a solitary starling was joining them. I found it amusing to see the other plastic dish bird bath containing circa a dozen starlings with a single sparrow. It was as if one of each species had decided to join the other type

Some of the birds are as interested in the guests that come to visit them as we are in coming to see them, of course.

This fellow wanted a good snoop at my camera - or maybe it was a wildfowl equivalent of a movie star EXPECTING to be in front of every camera it ever saw…

Finally - its eye caught another of its own kind and they wandered away - happily ever after - beak to beak

I still have a few photos to share from our May excursion to the Arundel wetlands reserve. At this rate, it will be time to take another batch on next year’s trip!

Whether he came on his own choosing or was imported, this little fellow is a recognizable bird - one I was used to seeing in Australia - so I took his picture as I passed by.

3 types of tit

October 5th 2010 14:25
Whilst looking out of the kitchen window earlier this week, I noticed a strange bird I had not seen very often before. It was hanging out on the rose bush on the arch just outside - and was shortly followed by a second. Two more joined it soon afterwards. The blue-tits were on the peanut feeder and a great-tit had been around just before - so I was not surprised to find the foursome to be long-tailed tits.

I did not have my camera on hand, but hope to capture some shots of the new visiting family soon. Until then, I can share a little information about the species with you

Seedy

Looking back through some old photos, I found one of my pet budgy. I recall having asked my mom and dad for a pet and being told to make a list of anything I thought suitable. I came up with along list of exotic creatures such as parrots, lizards, huge shaggy-haired dogs, Australian wombats…

Shortly afterward, a friend of mine got themselves a budgy and began to train it to play with a ring and to talk. Knowing the breeder, they were able to obtain a baby budgy for me when my parents thankfully agreed that it might be more suitable than anything on my list
