Bird Story - November 2010

Yard Bird Update 12

November 28th 2010 17:27
Before continuing with the years photographs, I thought I would take a post to update you on what has been going on in our yard lately.

One of the baby wood pigeons has been sitting in the tree around lunchtime lately - maybe waiting for me to put out the birds lunch at 12-30, I thought - but no - he stayed in the tree for at least a half hour before investigating the food source.

The past few days have been frosty and temperatures have been around zero. A robin was ‘ice skating’ on my dad’s pond this lunch hour. It landed, either slid or walked extremely fast along and then hopped a few steps before flying off.

The thrush is back with us for winter - it was a rare visitor during the warmer weather, but I have spotted it several times in just 2-3 days. I am looking forward to seeing the redwings and black caps again shortly….

Yard Bird Update 11

November 24th 2010 17:17
Well, I have just two more photographs to share with you from May this year - then we can step a tad closer to being update and get into my June photos.

The first is a jackdaw standing on my father’s roof. There were a pair that nested up in our chimney and had a baby jackdaw that scrabbbled about a bit at night but was otherwise quite quiet.

Next, a cute picture of a goldfinch. It might not be close up - but it shoes the bird clearly compared to most of my other photos of this species to date. (I need a camera with a better zoom!!)

Yard Bird Update 10

Well, the first photo is not very clear - but was taken of a sparrow having a dust bath on my vegetable patch pathway.

There next follows a trio of pictures of a starling munching food on dad’s bird table. Perhaps not very exciting - but these are the next in the folder of photos to share….

Greenfinches

November 18th 2010 17:18
One of the birds that is not sighted oftenly in my father’s garden is the greenfinch. In fact, I have only spotted one on 2-3 occasions in the year that I have been living here. I was lucky enough to grab a few photos of this bird however…

The greenfinch is also known as the green linnet, though it is larger in size than the regular linnet at 15cm. The yellowy stripes are not always as vibrant and the female is not as bright as the male.

The greenfinch is common to the entire country of England and consumes insects as well as weed seeds.

Yard Bird Update 9

November 4th 2010 15:04
WP and baby were going through the process of learning the offspring to feed for themselves. I have seen this numerous times in the show pigeon, magpie and rock dove world, but here it is repeated with wood pigeons.

The parent (might be the father or mother) ensures the baby bird is fairly hungry but instead of feeding it leads it to see it land at the food source. It then is shown by the parent how to peck up seeds. Instead of being fed it is encouraged to pick up its own seed
