Some of my friends live in our yard, others visit it, still others live elsewhere and I visit them. Come and read about all my feathered friends...

Bird Story - December 2010

Photographs & annual vacation notice

December 16th 2010 17:16
I have two last photographs to share with you from July, before I disappear for a couple of weeks writing-vacation to focus on family and festivities. (Regular readers wanting to catch the first January post can subscribe via email or RSS.)

I finally got a fairly good - clear focused if not twig-free - picture of one of the baby wood pigeons. You can see how ‘fluffy’ their facial feathers are at a young age and how prominent their beaks. The wing coloration is also only partial at this stage.

The second photograph is of a bunch of starlings that rested in dad’s tree on the other side of the yard after having a mad-crazy bathing session - which left the bird bath practically empty and somewhat dirty. They enjoyed their bath and then sat and preened in his tree.

A friend or not a friend?

A picture of a wood pigeon sitting in the tree outside my window and ignoring me starts my post today.

It ignored me even more….

Curiosity eventually pulled it around to take a gander at me…

It then stared directly at me…

But I was soon put into second place as another pigeon stole my companion….

Yard Bird Update 15

This first picture is a rather poor shot of a baby blackbird.

This second shot is even worse - as the youngster decided to turn and preen at the wrong moment!

I tried again… but with just as little success. Firstly, my zoom did not work well enough and secondly, there are too many twigs on those branches that kept getting in the way!

Oh well - maybe next year I will get better photos of the baby birds - I may have to invest in a new camera and lop some twigs first though!

Yard Bird Update 14

December 5th 2010 15:19
We have an injured starling in our hedge. I noticed it first 3 days ago. It was sitting in the bird table to eat and later fluttered awkwardly to the ground and rummaged about for crumbs before disappearing into the hedge.

Yesterday, I spotted it again, coming out from the hedge pecking crumbs and scooting back again - so I threw some food down nearby. It seems to be suffering from a damaged wing

Yard Bird Update 13

A pair of friends? Perhaps…. But one of these sparrows that I took a photo of back in June sure is not a sparrow - but a greenfinch!

Meanwhile, in July, we had baby wood pigeons living in the tree outside my bedroom window.

Unfortunately, none of my pictures came out very well….
