Bird Story - January 2011

NEWS from the yard…. bad and good

January 28th 2011 17:11
Well, I would have more news except I seem to have had a sinus infection causing me to not have much time to stand around staring out of the window. I did not get enough bed rest to completely alleviate matters, but the only time spent in the kitchen was cooking and escaping to sit down in the hallway - and the only time in my room on the bed I had my eyes shut, resting if not sleeping.

However, I also got a brand new digital camera. This means that I shall hopefully soon have many new photos to share. I am aware that I haven’t shared all those I took last year yet, but I am up to October in the backlog!

I did notice that we have more birds in the back yard this year than last - the thrush seems resident and we have at least 2 pairs of blackbird, all of which seem to be constantly hopping about munching rotting fallen apples or berries and bugs. The front yard has not got as many birds as last year though - Dad’s tree did not have many berries on it so the blackcaps didn’t come this year - and the redwings ignored our cotoneaster berries.

Yard Bird Update 18

January 22nd 2011 17:42
Today I have had more time by the kitchen window, as my father has been in bed most of the day, not feeling his best. I have been observing the resident thrush as well as the blackbird pair and sparrows.

The thrush seems to inhabit our back yard most of the day now. Earlier on, I watched it nibbling at a chunk of homemade bread. It was enjoying its meal until a male blackbird shot up and flapped its wings. The thrush stepped back a few strides, dragging its meal with it several times. The blackbird wanted the bread too…

In the end, they both got some as it broke in two pieces - though there was plenty more on the bird table as |I had only just put it out. During the day I also watched the thrush drink, bathe, scurry through the ferns, and sit in the tree. The pair of blackbirds investigated the garden path quite a lot - probably finding some bugs after I picked the sprouts.

Yard Bird Update 17

January 18th 2011 17:39
The photos I plan to share with you today and later on in the week come from October last year. The first is of a friendly wood pigeon. Not so much friendly compared to the Australian show pigeons I used to live with, but friendly compared to most local British birds.

And here are the babies…

Some days, pigeons fly away but on others they just stare.

Yard Bird Update 16

January 15th 2011 14:38
I shall be back into sharing photographs and talking about the various bird species in England, where I currently live, shortly - but first a quick round up of the past month bird-wise:

Very little has been going on in the yard, mainly due to wet and cold weather. There was not much snow this year, and what did fall did not stay more than a few days - allowing the birds to eat natural foods a lot of the time and 'snack' at the bird table. The birds have been drenched, but able to locate insects, seeds, and berries with ease
