Bird Story - May 2011

Yard Bird Update 43 - doves

I recently - um - maybe not THAT recently - it was March! - took some photos of some turtle doves sitting in the tree outside my bedroom window.

Two babies and their parents were living there for several weeks and they did not seem to mind me too much - or my bright pink camera.

I am not sure if it was a baby or a parent - but I saw a ginger cat pounce into the shrubs in my neighbor’s yard and run off carrying a dead dove in its mouth last week. I am not sure if it is the tree family or another dove though, as there are quite a lot around now.

Beautiful babies

May 16th 2011 12:48
I was treated to the delightful sight of 10 birds sharing the waterbowl just after lunchtime today. 6 baby starlings and 4 baby sparrows were all taking a drink or bath at the same time. There was a lot of chattering and chirping going on - but no fighting. I guess they had yet to learn that starling are supposed to chase sparrows out of the water bowl!

It was nice to see the different breeds getting along, albeit at young age only, unlike us humans. Can you imagine two opposing religions, cultures, or citizens of two warring countries sharing a sauna or spa for instance? Perhaps, but….

The birds knew what they wanted - water - and what they wanted to do with it - drink or bathe - and simply did this. When adult, I expect they will fight amongst themselves as well as inter-species dominance displays, but it was nice to watch them all getting along - for now!

Yard Bird Update 42

May 14th 2011 14:49
Baby birds everywhere! At least a half dozen starlings, 4 sparrows, and 2 baby blackbirds were all enjoying the back yard at once this lunchtime!

The birdbath is needing a refill more than once a day as the starlings and sparrows bathe and splash and lose the water. The soil can hardly have any bugs left as they all peck and bite and consume.

The tree outside my window is delightful entertainment. Baby starlings and sparrows sit in it waiting - parent birds come up from the bird table or ground below and all the babies give their specific sounds for ‘food, gimme food!’ til they are fed. Some flutter their tiny wings, others gape their beaks, some just make their call…

Of course I have been busy with my camera - but not yet uploaded these pictures. For now, here is a picture of a jackdaw diving into the bird table about to fly away to the chimney above with a beak full of food for their babies…

Yard Bird Update 41

May 9th 2011 15:25
I have been enjoying the babies in the tree all week - taking photos and observing them. I am hoping that some day English birds will become as friendly as Australian ones.

Maybe, if I get well acquainted with them at an early age, I can teach them not to be frightened of EVERY human. At the moment, the baby sparrow and baby blackbird seem to be fairly friendly - but they have yet to be warned against humans by their parents perhaps

Yard Bird Update 40

May 6th 2011 17:03
Today I am sharing two photos of a blue tit that decided to have a drink at a time when the camera was without grabbing distance. Today, I saw a great tit that flew past the window onto the patio then back onto the rose arch to peck at the bugs on the rose bushes. Alas, I did not have my camera handy - we don’t often see the great tits, only these blue tits are ‘daily’ visitors.

The birth-tree

May 3rd 2011 16:05
I am convinced the tree outside my bedroom window must be the most popular tree for baby birds to be born in in the entire village. Just as baby doves and sparrows left, there is a baby blackbird and a wood pigeon is busy building a nest…

I have been taking a few videos as well as photos in the past month, so hopefully shall have at least 2-3 videos to share shortly. I am still getting used to my latest camera, but am beginning to find the various features hiding spots. Hopefully, the video I shot of the wood pigeon pecking a twig from the tree itself for its nest will come out well - as well as the ones of wood pigeons and blackbirds on the path
