Bird Story - June 2011

Yard Bird Update 49

June 29th 2011 13:32
If you guessed that my next post would be about pigeons - you were close - it is about doves. I caught a couple of shots recently of a pair of doves enjoying dad’s back yard.

More recently, there has not been much action from the coves - although I have spotted a pair munching seed twice this week. I think one of these must have been a young one - as it did not yet seem able to navigate the bird table roof very well. In fact, it took longer to climb down from the roof and fly into the table than it did to eat…

The time before, I spotted one dove sitting resting in the bird table. Whether it had eaten its fill, or whether it was the young one taking a nap, I am uncertain. The second dove was seed munching happily.

Yard Bird Update 48

Before I bore everyone with some MORE pigeon & dove piccies, here is a slight breather - a baby thrush photo.

Plateface and Thrushie’s as yet unnamed child really enjoyed digging about in my potato patch for a couple of weeks. In fact, as soon as I had earthed up my spuds, this young thrush was responsible for unearthing them!

I must admit it was during a long spell of rainlessness, and there were not many grubs or worms around. I am hoping the baby found something moist and tender to keep itself healthy with - even if the more creature had to die to be eaten.

More recently, a strange lump of earth has appeared around my potatoes. I am hoping I do not have a termite mound growing instead of potatoes…

Yard Bird Update 47

June 22nd 2011 12:35
Although there are doves and wood pigeons in my photos again, I assure you I have yet to repeat a picture! I simply take a lot of photos since having turned digital a few years back!

There are doves in our yard at the moment - well, at least they were there half an hour ago whilst I was washing up. These photos were taken two months ago, however.

…& do I ever post without talking about a pigeon? Well, maybe sometimes I do, but here are another two shots of wood pigeons in dad’s yard. One in my veg plot and one on the bird bath.

Yard Bird Update 46

June 14th 2011 14:09
Doves feature almost as often as pigeons in my writings, as I am sure regular readers are aware. When moving from Australia to England in 2009, both pigeons and doves became strange to me - as the breeds were somewhat different, if the family remained the same.

I took a couple of shots of a pair of smooch turtle doves sitting in the tree outside my bedroom window in April this year…

Wood Pigeon video

June 11th 2011 14:11
Here is a short (circa 40 secs) video I made of a wood pigeon pecking about for food in my recently planted vegetable patch - which is probably why not much has surfaced since. The video was taken in April of 2011.

For those unable to view videos for whatever reason - there follows a photo of a wood pigeon - from amongst many taken over the past 3-4 months.

Yard Bird Update 45

June 5th 2011 14:49
Before I begin to share the April and May photographs that I took, I will just give a short update about the situation. The tree outside my bedroom window is alive with birds from dawn til dusk. I only have to peep out, and I can spot more action than on a TV soapie.

Some of the baby birds are learning not to trust other species - for example, the thrushes are chasing sparrows away. I am sure it will not be long before humans become as taboo as cats, and I will lose sight of many of my feathered friends

Yard Bird Update 44

June 1st 2011 16:27
Finishing up the photos I took in March leaves me with an unrelated pair to share with you. The first march photo not yet shared is of a starling on the water bowl. Yes, the starlings are also often in the yard recently - also with many young hanging out in the tree outside my window. In fact, you could almost call it the nursery tree - as multiple species of bird leave there young safely sitting in its branches and hunt for food to bring to them - sparrows, starlings, pigeons, doves, blue-tits, blackbirds…

Secondly, a pair of sparrows dashing about so fast the camera did not catch them very well. The sparrows have been busy in the yard all through the past couple of months, with many nesting in the tree and hedges. A few of the younger ones come onto my windowsill from time to time.
