Bird Story - August 2011

WP begins to build a nest

August 30th 2011 15:42
This video is made up of three short segments taken across thirty minutes of real time. WP the wood pigeon was trying to bite off twigs from the tree outside my bedroom window in order to build a nest. Currently, we have a pair of wood pigeons nesting (with eggs) in the tree outside the front yard and a pair beginning to build a nest in the holly tree between our property and next door - so there has been yet more activity since my videoing of WP's nesting.

I enjoy watching the way these pigeons nest - which is very similar to Australian show pigeons - in that female bird sits in a setting and arranges the sticks and twigs brought by the male. Sometimes the male brings exceedingly large sticks that he can barely carry in his beak and it is quite amusing to watch them struggle along with them in order to impress their lady!

Yard Bird Update 61 - blue-tits

August 26th 2011 14:02
I have a few more blue-tit photos to finish off my picture collection from May. Firstly, a couple of shots of a blue-tit acrobatically searching for lunch in the bark.

Next, to end my May photo collection, a pair of shots of a parent and child blue-tit - also dangling about the tree outside my bedroom window. I swear this tree is better than watching soapies on TV - it is real life!! It is a bit like watching an ornithology program through the window!

Missing Pigeon - Triangle Pigeon Club

August 22nd 2011 13:30
I thought I would post this message in a new posting and hopefully the owner will be searching and find the pigeon!!!

QUOTE: There is a beautiful pigeon that has frequented our back deck and pool for the last couple of weeks. He is very friendly and is obviously around humans. He has a tag on both feet. On says, Triangle Pigeon Club and 278. The other is harder to read but I believe it says "Pleasant Loft". Please help this little fellow find his home. My email is tj.brimmer@earthlink.net.

Yard Bird Update 60 - jackdaws

August 21st 2011 13:25
Today I have a few pictures to share taken a couple of months ago of birds in the tree outside my bedroom window. For regular readers, you will know to expect anything from a magpie to a finch, or from a sparrow to a dove. This time, I have 2 jackdaw photos to share.
jackdaw

This is actually a baby jackdaw - which is probably why he was sitting in the tree and also why he was not flying away. The adults tend to stay clear of humans, preferring to watch from the rooftops until all is clear, then swoop down and snatch the biggest chunk of food on the bird table. He seemed curious as to why a hoard of starlings and sparrows were flying to my windowsill and fluttering about noisily - maybe interested in the crumbs I had put out for his own belly, too

Yard Bird Update 59

August 17th 2011 17:19
If you are wondering what has been going on in the yard lately, quite a lot! Out front, I spotted familiar pigeon behaviour in the tree between our house and next door. One pigeon sitting in the tree and a second going away and returning with an assortment of twigs. Yes, we have a nest! There is currently one adult pigeon sitting and chattering 'pigeon coos' on the nest....

In the back yard, we still have several young and baby birds. It seems that 2011 is a good year for baby birds in dad's yard, as we definitely did not have this many last year

Yard Bird Update 58

August 13th 2011 15:38
More baby birds! This time bluetits. From time to time, baby bluetits have been seen in the tree outside my bedroom window - and here are some photos taken in May to prove it.
baby bluetit

Baby bluetits are just as fluffy as baby sparrows, but easy to tell apart. They are smaller and have yellow fluff. One major difference between the adult and child bluetit is in their face. The young have yellow rather than white cheeks. They make the same shrill tweet, and can be just as acrobatic as the adults as they dance over the tree to peck bugs off the bark.

Yard Bird Update 57 - more babies

August 9th 2011 17:04
I have yet more baby bird photos to share with you today. These were taken on the tree outside my room in May. The first one is of a baby blackbird that frequented the tree from time to time whilst growing up. The second and third photo are of baby starlings - of whom you will see more in a future post!

Yard Bird Update 56 - sparrows

August 6th 2011 15:45
Sparrows - so tiny, but so sweet and friendly compared to many of the local birds. Here are several pictures I took in May of a pair of baby sparrows who used the tree outside of my bedroom window as a nursery. The parents left them there, hunted for food, fed them there...

There are still a few baby sparrows in the yard - and some have been taught to peck seeds from my windowsill by their parents - they don't fly away if I go near, although most of the adult sparrows do.

Yard Bird Update 55

August 2nd 2011 16:10
I spotted a strange looking bird in the tree last night and cannot find it listed in either of my bird referemnce guides. I have also checked my father's two bird guides, but still cannot find the bird listed.

This is not the first time I have encountered a mystery bird that I cannot identify. A couple of times in Australia, I came across mysterious breeds that I had to look up before knowing the identity of - or my son already knew them. This time, I am stumped however
