Bird Story - November 2011

Yard Bird Update 80- bird bath duets

November 29th 2011 17:23
An interesting observance occurred yesterday. I was in the kitchen, as I often am, and glanced out the window to the stone bird bath. I spotted the little robin taking a bath - the one with high orangey markings. This was nothing unusual, until a blue-tit perched on the bird bath and also took a bath at the same time.

This is fairly uinusual, as generally when one bird lands, the other takes flight - or the one already there chases the newcomer away. The next time I glanced up, the robin was leaving, the blue-tit bathing, and what should I spot but a blackcap landing and taking a bath - right next to the blue-tit.

The next time I glanced up, the blackcap was sharing the bath with a sparrow. I have honestly never seen so much multiracial bathing going on in dad's yard.

Yard Bird Update 79

November 22nd 2011 17:46
The seasons might be changing at strange times, but change they do. I saw the first of the winter birds today - a blackcap.

In fact, it has been a rather good day for birdwatching out of the window. The tree was filled with blue-tits earlier on, with at least 4 hopping about the branches searching for bugs to munch. They also flew onto the sill to peck at a few bits of suet pellt and meal worm I put out for them and one tapped on the window - perhaps thinking a smudge was a bug!

The robin with the orangey high patch has made its home in our yard, it seems, because I have seen it every day for a couple of weeks now. I have seen many blackbirds, starlings, sparrows, and a few goldfinches, too. I even spotted a hedgehog today, although not a bird, it was interesting to watch.

Yard Bird Update 78

Once again, I am full of pigeons! I do have a cheeky little sparrow to start off with though.

The rest of my September pictures are all doves and pigeons. Today, I have even more baby pigeon pictures to share. It has been an unusually warm fall and the birds still haven't figured out winter is almost here.

Today, I am sharing photos taken of the various birds in the tree outside my bedroom window in September of this year. We start with a couple of the local dove species....

Yard Bird Update 76

November 8th 2011 13:47
Today, I am sharing the last of my August pigeon photos. But first - a quick text update on the situation. Yesterday, the weather finally chilled and dampened down for fall, creating a mild change in the bird habits.

The little robin with orange rather than red breast and the color going higher up its forehead than others has taken up residence in the tree outside my bedroom window, it would seem. Last night, he was twit-chittering at me for a good half hour, and likewise has been spotted today. Also today, I spotted the robin chasing the wren away from the patch where I dug up my potatoes, as if to claim territory of the bugs living in the recently disturbed soils

parent and child pigeon

Today, I would like to share a few more photos from August. One sparrow and a bunch of wood pigeons. I know, I take far too many shots of wood pigeons - but I have a special interest in pigeons, and this is the only type we have locally. I especially like the above shot of the parent and child, myself...

Yard Bird Update 74

I recently got 4 poor shots of a visiting finch. Unfortunately, my zoom is not quite up to taking good quality shots of smaller birds - especially not those that like to jump about and turn away...

For a more general update, we are still having wood pigeons fledge in the tree outside my bedroom window - 2 new birds appeared squeakingly within the past week. Yes, photos will follow - but not yet, I am still 2-3 months behind
