ANOTHER LOSS
May 9th 2008 16:34
I was turning out my lamp ready to climb into my bed, when I heard a loud THUMP. I thought the lady next door was shooing the pigeons from her windowsill for the night, as sometimes they accumulate on her sills, rather than on ours or our alcoves.
My son shortly came out from his room, to inform me that a white pigeon had flown into his window, then walked down the path towards the other next door. He was not sure if it was one of ours, as it had a wing drooping down.
Rather concerned, I hurried back into my clothes and outside. BabyNob was standing stunned halfway up the path of next door's driveway. Sure enough, one wing was dragging. The look on the pigeon's face… as if it was a 'sorry, but this is gonna be goodbye - don't bother about me, please'. Somewhat worried, I armed my son with a cardboard box - having hastily emptied it of the onions and potatoes that had been resident within - and he attempted to fetch our pigeon home, so I could mind it indoors overnight, safe from cat-attack.
Unfortunately, BabyNob flew away from this gesture of goodwill, and has not been seen since. I guess when he stared up towards me on the path he was saying 'goodbye and leave me alone to die'…
