BALDNESS
April 11th 2008 21:19
Bald-bonse got named because when we first met our friendly magpie he had a balding patch on his skull. We spent 3 years being his chief cheese-provider! His featherless space came and went, seasonally I assume. We still sometimes meet him at the park across the street or on the road to the local shops.
More recently, I have noticed another balding bird. A baby myna bird seems to have a very yellow face with few feathers. I have learned from this that myna birds have yellow skin all over, underneath their feathers, and not just their eye-leg areas. If the feathers are not there, their face remains bald and yellow. I can always tell our tamest baby myna from the others, as it has an empty yellow face!
I am not sure if there is something in the water around our area, or if it is just a coincidence, but these birds seem to be losing their head feathers. Perhaps it is just seasonal, or an old/young age problem.
(In other news, I hope to post some white-faced heron shots next week - I was testing out the zoom on my new camera yesterday when I spotted a heron land in my back yard and investigate my vegetable patch - but have not yet checked to see how the pictures came out. Fingers crossed I shall have some good shots AND some of the tame pelicans from my trip to Kiama tomorrow!)
