Some of my friends live in our yard, others visit it, still others live elsewhere and I visit them. Come and read about all my feathered friends...

Galah and Raven

December 3rd 2007 17:06
Recently, I heard a strange noise in the backyard, whilst attempting to study my notes for my final class in Buddhism. I put down my papers, went to the window, and then looked out, wondering what bird it could be. It had sounded like a galah or cockatoo.

Indeed, galahs it was! Three or four of them had somehow noticed the pigeons feasting on their dinner seeds, which I had strewn about the doorstep five minutes previously. Out came that trusty camera of mine and I managed to take a couple of decent shots, one of which is below.

Only an hour or so later, camera still at the ready, I heard a more familiar noise. Knowing it to be our tame and friendly raven, I peeped outside. Sure enough, once he saw the curtains move and my face at the window, he 'ran' towards the house, and doorway, expectantly. He knew where he would get a free cheese-dish! I took a picture of him coming up the path towards the house.

I love galahs, they are so very beautiful, not too shy but not wanting to be friendly, unlike my sulfur crested cockatoo and my lorrikeets with their still dependent 'huge' babies, bigger than their parents but still crying out to be fed.

The young ones let me stroke them, that is so delightful.

Hahaha, I'd walk up your walkway for a tasty cheese sandwich myself, sandeye, I am not familiar with the other bird but ravens, we have a few here in Alaska. Among the indigenous first nations people, ravens were considered messengers of god and black birds were healers, both are mischief makers. My last name literally translates into Raven.
