Garden update

We have had some interesting occurrences in the back yard recently. Firstly, it is no secret that silver gulls gets somewhat pissed off with kookaburras. If they spot one calmly resting upon a TV aerial, they will swoop and squawk at it, annoying the poor thing. Our local mob of gulls are an adventurous lot - last week I spotted them trying to attack a cat! I heard their familiar screeching attack on something, and went to see if I could throw a scrap lout for a kookaburra. I did not find a kookaburra however, but the cat from two doors along, cowering under attack, scrunched as low to the garden path as possible, with a bunch of screaming gulls swooping overhead.
Secondly, Smokey and Spotty have been to visit - primarily at dinnertime - a few times last week. Spotty is almost fearless in her pursuit of seed now, amongst a large crowd of at least 2 dozen city pigeons it would be a case of 'only crumbs left' if she was not. The weather has been somewhat cold recently, Sydney actually having snow in the city according to my son's report of a weather report from either TV or the WWW. I know that down south in the Illawarra I have been wearing a winter coat, hat and gloves for my early-morning typing sessions. I have also swollen out into chilblains on two fingers - ouchies!
Finally, the cold weather has had several previous visitors returning to call for food. Two times last week I found the familiar call of the Australian black-backed magpie issuing from the yard. On these occasions I managed to toss out a few small pieces of cheese. I am sure it is one of the youngsters who grew up getting such treats as daily offerings prior to the departure of the magpies due to raven infestation. It definitely knew that standing outside the door and calling out would produce that yellow salty calcium chunk for it and it's mate!
