Although we don't own or house them, and did not purchase them, our friendly 'tame-wild' show pigeons are quite fun as unofficial pets! We feed and love them, and that seems to be enough for them to love us back.
If I just open the back door a fraction when Smokey is nearby, he will dart onto the door top and parade upon it claimfully. He knows I would not shut the door if he perches on top of it. He KNOWS I have to check to make sure he is OK!!
Sometimes, if I am going to the store or library, I have to shoo him off, but usually I let him stay if he manages to get there. It seems to make him happy & only means a quick wash of the vinyl floor below afterwards.
On rare occasion, my bedroom sliding door will be left open. Perhaps I am reading or studying, or maybe playing music, and therefore 'free' to observe and hang out with my feathered friends. Smokey will always walk right on into my bedroom, though the three babes, Baby1, Bebe2, and BabyNob will only enter if the curtains are not whooshing about in the winds. They are not quite so brave!
A couple of days ago, when I was reading, I allowed them to enter my room. Smokey shot inside, where he began to peck at the dust in my incense tray, nibble at my Buddhism notes, and poop on the carpet. All three babes then marched in…
They simply took a quick look around, with a short peck at whatever resembled food, before going to the entryway to find a suitable perching spot. Black Scruff had also flown directly into the room, seeing Smokey in there, landed on my bed, stared at me, then flew out casually. Smokey remained in my room - like a pet cat, he walked over the book I was reading, looking up at me as if to demand my attention. He then proceeded to stare deeply into my photo of Boone Spooner, and attempt to peck it in what might either have been a kiss or a nibble. Finally, he flew onto my bed and walked up and down for a little while, pecked my boot, then flew into the entryway to shoo one of the babes off the laundry tub.
