Update on baby birds
May 21st 2010 09:10
Two baby blackbirds were tossed a worm that Pa-bird had found and bitten. One of them hopped after Pa, waiting to be fed - leaving the second youngster to stare at the worm. It pecked at it, played with it, tried to eat some of it, and eventually ate about half - I then had to leave the kitchen window so did not learn whether it ate the rest or left it.
Pa blackbird sat on my windowsill - the baby birds watched. I think they are learning that crumbs on the sill are safer than cat infested lawns! One baby amused me by sitting in the tree playing with a leaf - trying to bite it. It was as if baby birds use their 'mouths' as well as baby humans to explore their new world.
One of the baby starlings has a dangly leg. We currently have circa 9 baby starlings visit our yard. (Photos coming in a week or two - as I will have the net at home next week) It gets very noisy when they all take a bath at one time!
In fact, the back yard is exceedingly busty right now. We have the baby blackbirds, starlings, sparrows, robin, and more. One sparrow baby sits on the tree near my window in the morning and chirrups at me. I have learnt to mimic his chirrup and call back and it fascinates him.
I should have broadband connected at home in 6-7 days time, so will finally be able to share all the photos that I have been promising to from the past six months of camera! These include robins, goldfinches, wood pigeons and swans.
