Where it went

We do not only have pigeons and garden birds; we also have mice. One little fellow likes to nest in the ceiling of our entryway. This will be the second year I have been woken in the night by scraping, shuffling sounds above me - at least this year I know what it is! Last time, I really did not know, and was thinking we had cockroaches, rats, possums…
Sometimes, in the morning I will encounter a pile of chewed up sawdust on the entry floor. This originated as ceiling board and went via mouse-mouth to a new status. On one such morning last week, I sighed, and was expecting to sweep it up after doing a few other chores - such as feeding the pigeons and having a shower. I fed the pigeons and took my shower. I went back to the entryway, expecting the mess to be everywhere and ready for the broom - only to find it had practically vanished! A little confused, I stared into corners, thinking a breeze had shifted the sawdust. A few scraps remained, but most had disappeared entirely.
The mystery was soon explained. A turtle dove flew into the entryway, skidding to a halt - took a look at this great big human standing there - instantly removed itself, flying out onto the lawn. A pigeon flew in next, walked right in, not scared of the human with food pouring out of it, and removed some left behind material. What once was house-ceiling and got gnawed up for mouse-nest, left scraps for bird-nests…
