Yard Bird Update 2
June 24th 2010 16:35
Well it has been a yard full of baby bird events this week. Firstly, I caught sight of a baby greenfinch sitting on our tree. The parents were nearby having a drink of water at the time. They soon rejoined their child who happily flapped its tiny wings as if to show off that it had wings. It was able to fly, but seemed to love the fact that its wings moved as it sat their flapping away.
Next, I took the laundry out to hang up on the line early yesterday morning. What should I encounter on exiting the garden door, but a baby sparrow on the path. It took a look at me, seemed a bit scared and hopped rather than flew away from ‘danger’.
I walked slowly after waiting a moment, but it simply hopped further into the side of the yard where there were plenty of shrubs to hide in. Baby sparrows are therefore not as tame as starlings in our yard - for there is a baby starling that is exceptionally tame. My father only has to put out the bird food on their table and it flies straight down, without waiting for us to go inside. It is a bit of a bully though - it chases off any other starlings from HIS table - even the adults!
