Yard Bird Update 9
November 4th 2010 15:04
WP and baby were going through the process of learning the offspring to feed for themselves. I have seen this numerous times in the show pigeon, magpie and rock dove world, but here it is repeated with wood pigeons.
The parent (might be the father or mother) ensures the baby bird is fairly hungry but instead of feeding it leads it to see it land at the food source. It then is shown by the parent how to peck up seeds. Instead of being fed it is encouraged to pick up its own seed….
Sometimes this works, but more often than not, the baby bird still squeaks and begs to be fed - wobbling its wings hopefully. Cheeky birds might feed themselves when parents are not watching and then beg for more from the parent….
One thing I have noticed here, is that the baby wood pigeons have trouble getting into the bird table first time. Landing on top is easy - but figuring out how to get into the table under the roof takes time!
